The Brüggliäcker housing estate is located in Zurich between Schwamendingen and Oerlikon, a few hundred meters from the Hallenstadion. The settlement was designed by BS+EMI Architect Partners from Zurich. The three buildings with three stories each house a total of 63 apartments and four maisonettes.
The award-winning settlement, which was completed in 2014, is a hybrid construction of wood and concrete. The inner walls and ceilings were constructed in solid construction and all outer walls in load-bearing wooden construction.
Neighborhood Appreciation
According to the Arc Award jury, the architects succeeded in creating a transition between the small quarter with single-family houses on the one hand and the long row of buildings on the other. It is also praised that the figure of the buildings cannot be grasped in its actual dimensions from any point of view. In this way, a scale and intimacy corresponding to the quarter is created. According to the jury, the settlement also enhances the quality of life and living in a district that is not one of the most privileged in the city. It was chaired by ETH professor Sacha Menz. The winning project has prevailed over 120 other competition entries.
