Wooden Platform Provides an Optimal View of the New Elephant Enclosure

The elephants from Basel Zoo have significantly more space to move since last week. The zoo has built a new, generously designed elephant enclosure. Visitors can observe the elephants from an impressive wooden viewing platform, the structure and construction of which was carried out by Timbatec.

The Zoo Base l, Switzerland's oldest and most diverse zoo, has created a real Savannah landscape for its elephants over the last three and a half years. The new facility extends over 5300 square meters and is two and a half times as large as the previous one.

Almost like in the wild The course is designed very close to nature and allows the four elephant cows Rosy (22 years old), Maya (23), Heri (41) and Malayka (46) to move like they could in the wild. You can take a bath in the heated water basin, rest on sandy ground or play in the mud. "Tembea" is the name of the new facility. This is in Kiswahili, which means "in motion."

Last weekend the zoo officially opened the new home for its elephant ladies with a party; media from home and abroad reported in detail about the new facility.

A box seat for zoo visitors  There are also new features for visitors. Among other things, the zoo has built a new covered observation platform. It stands elevated near the zoo restaurant. From this "impressive viewing platform" (quote "Basler Zeitung") you can see practically the entire elephant enclosure.

The platform, which sits on concrete columns, was built of wood. The special feature: The contours of the visitor platform are modelled on the head of an elephant. The platform therefore has no right angles - a challenge for Timbatec's timber construction engineers, who were responsible for the statics and construction of the building.
