STE-Compact plan representation in timber construction

The work methods in timber construction have changed from manual processing to mostly CNC machining. Consequently, CAD drawing programs are predominantly used nowadays and plans are created digitally from the very beginning. The new STE-Compact publication «Plan representation in timber construction», which was developed under the direction of Lukas Rüegsegger, acts as an aid for collaboration in timber construction.

In contrast to the presentation of architectural plans, there are no current guidelines for the presentation of digitally created plans in timber construction. Today, plans in timber construction are displayed very individually, mostly based on company guidelines. When different parties work together, this can lead to misunderstandings. In the new publication, the representation is stated in the sense of an industry recommendation.

The aim of this documentation is to simplify understanding in the exchange of plans between different project participants. It was deliberately decided not to include workshop plans for the manufacture of the timber components and timber construction elements in the documentation. The presentation of these plans is very much dependent on the requirements and working methods of the respective timber construction company and is usually only used as an internal planning basis and not for interdisciplinary coordination. The guide builds on the SIA 400 standard and supplements it with the presentation of timber construction plans.
