Research project basements in wood

Building construction makes a decisive contribution to achieving the climate targets if it completely dispenses with steel and concrete. Dispensing with steel and concrete in basements could make a further contribution to the net-zero strategy targets.

Timbatec has built Switzerland's first wooden basement in Thun. This pilot project has shown the need for research so that basements in wood will one day become the standard. At the Bern University of Applied Sciences, an Innosuisse research project for the development of a system for the construction of basements in wood was started on 12.02.2021 at the intervention of Timbatec. The following companies are involved in the project as business partners: - Contec AG - Schilliger Holz AG - Timber Structures 3.0 AG - Gyger Flachdachbau AG - Stuberholz AG - Timbatec Timber Structures Switzerland AG

Timbatec has been committed to wood construction for over 20 years. Our vision is to build entire cities entirely out of wood. Doing without steel and concrete in the basements is a good first step in the right direction. In Thun, the first apartment building with a basement and floor slab made of wood was built in 2021. Cross-laminated timber panels lie on top of a 160 mm thick insulation board. Black insulation sheaths the wood for moisture protection. TS3 joints connect the individual CLT panels together. On site, the panels were grouted with a two-component polyurethane casting resin with no compression. The same construction was chosen for the floor slab.
