The solid timber wall elements "Ligno-Swiss" from Schmidlin are assembled from individual prismatic rods. These are installed vertically and each is provided with a threshold at the top and bottom. The lateral doweling generated a shear stiffness with which wind loads can be transferred.

The Reasons 

The shear strength and shear stiffness of the Lino-Swiss could not be calculated with sufficient certainty. Nor was there any report of comparable experiments known in the literature. For these reasons, it was decided to determine shear strength and shear stiffness values in special test series. 


The Experiments 

In a first series of 12 small tests (400x1000mm) the frame sizes were determined. Subsequently, the values were put to the test with 2 large-scale tests on a scale of 1:1 (1.25 x 3.00m). Determined permissible horizontal loads for displacement at the top edge h/1000 and wall height 2.60 m: - Standard dowelling: 0.90 kN/m - Reinforced dowelling: 2.70 kN/m - For comparison: timber frame construction: 5.60 kN/m   


Due to the low results, the "Standard" wall element can only be used for wind reinforcement of low wind forces. Here, an additional stiffening layer should be used. With the "Reinforced" wall element, the stiffening layer can be dispensed with under special circumstances if the walls are arranged accordingly. Furthermore, it should be noted that a certain plastic deformation always occurs due to settlement, which can also be seen in the displacement of the characteristic curve.
