Existing buildings shape the identity and the specific character of villages and towns. Recognizing the qualities of existing buildings and building on this basis is an important task for architecture. Inward settlement development has several advantages: it stops urban sprawl and saves grey energy because fewer new building materials are needed. Well renovated buildings are often comparable to new buildings from an energy point of view and satisfy the needs of the users.

We divide the further development of existing buildings into four main topics: Extending, adding on, remodeling and refurbishing. Wood has the edge in these areas. Because of its low weight, it is almost always the right choice of building material for additions. The fast and low-noise construction method with wood is convincing for additions and conversions. Thanks to its many advantages, more and more investors are turning to this sustainable building material, and timber construction is becoming a megatrend.

Continuing to build in existing buildings

In the latest issue of "Timber and Technology" magazine, we focus on the topic of "Building on existing structures" and provide insights into successful projects.

For Bernapark, we worked out suitable structural solutions so that two floors could be added to the existing and listed factory building (page 4), in Fribourg, the Psychiatric Center was renovated and expanded with the first hospital building constructed in timber (page 8), and in the heart of Bern, three listed buildings were completely hollowed out and adapted to today's needs (page 10).
