The project
The conversion and renovation of the inn involved the careful handling of a historically valuable existing building and its functional expansion. In addition to repairing the supporting structure, building envelope, and interior rooms, the attic was converted and 12 apartments were added. The aim was to adapt the existing building to today's requirements in terms of statics, construction, and building physics, while at the same time enabling new uses. The project implementation required close coordination with architects and monument preservation authorities, as well as differentiated solutions in timber construction between preservation, reinforcement, and new construction.
The construction method
The construction method is based on careful extension of the existing structure. Existing beam ceilings were specifically reinforced or replaced with new solid wood ceilings to compensate for unevenness and improve room heights. The roof truss was newly constructed, but clearly oriented towards the shape and geometry of the existing structure. The trusses are made of spruce glulam, with ash also being used in isolated cases for high loads.
The challenge
In particular, this project required the development of viable solutions in collaboration with the client, architect, and historic preservation authorities. The focus was on balancing the preservation of the existing structure, future use, and economic conditions—between upgrading the existing building and possible new construction.
