New district thanks to extension in timber construction method

A factory near Bern is transformed into an innovative residential area. In contrast to many industrial wastelands, the existing buildings here are not demolished but supplemented with two additional floors of timber construction. Timbatec is responsible for the static concept and quality assurance of the extension.

In Deisswil near Bern, more than 250 employees once produced cardboard for the whole country. However, in 2010, the responsibles shut down the machines. This is how the exciting history of Bernapark began. Investor Hans Ulrich-Müller took over the cartonboard factory and launched a project to give new life to the factory buildings. A new quarter with 170 rented apartments and commercial space is being built.

Since the venerable factory buildings are still of good quality, they were not demolished. The best solution for the conversion and expansion of the former cardboard factory was a two-storey wooden extension.

Static concept developed by Timbatec

Stuber Holz aus Schüpfen received the order for the timber construction. This always had to adapt to the winding factory buildings. Consequently, it is not entirely trivial to derive the forces that work. Different load-bearing directions of the ceiling elements and large spans required a sophisticated static concept. For the development of this concept and for quality assurance, the two companies called on Timbatec.

In the last few days, craftsmen and women tackled the erection work for the two-storey extension. Timbatec is pleased to be part of this project and wishes all participants good luck.
