Come in, come in: The new Simmental Arena was inaugurated last weekend with a big celebration for the people of the upper Simmental valley. The multifunctional timber construction is both a new home for the local fire department and a venue for markets, cattle shows and concerts.

The Simmental Arena is a hall for everyone and everything. Multi-functional in the best sense of the word. On the one hand, it is the long-awaited new work yard for the local fire department, which previously operated magazines at several locations and can now concentrate on one location thanks to the arena.

Above all, however, the Simmental Arena is an event hall: it is the venue for cattle shows and agricultural markets. It is also a festival hall, offers space for sports events and accommodates a restaurant. And last but not least, the new arena is a concert hall.

Music from Switzerland

She passed her baptism by fire on the inauguration weekend  when hundreds of people of all ages flocked to the Simmental Arena. Celebrities such as Ursula Zybach, President of the Grand Council of Berne, and former Federal Councillor Hans-Rudolf Merz officially opened the new hall.

In addition to attractions for young and old, the folk group Blaumeisen and the Zurich musician Nickless created a good atmosphere in two formations. Another nationally renowned artist has already announced himself for a guest appearance in the new location in the Bernese Oberland: at the end of October, rapper Bligg ("Musigg i dä Schwiiz") will perform in the arena.

Timber from Switzerland

The musician is sure to attract a large crowd of spectators, as the Simmental Arena can accommodate up to 2000 people. The building is 80 meters long and over 30 meters wide and is made of Swiss timber. Around 2000 cubic meters of certified timber from Swiss forests were used for the arena - for a good reason: "We are in a region with a lot of timber," said Ernst Hodel, President of the Zweisimmen Municipal Council, to the Jungfrauzeitung, "which is why this material was also used for the construction". The building will soon be awarded the label "Herkunftszeichen Schweizer Holz HSH" by Lignum.

A special feature: The hall, in which Timbatec was responsible for construction planning, statics, earthquake stiffening and fire protection planning, does not require supports inside. The hall roof together with the high-performance photovoltaic system is supported by a good dozen 38-meter long arched girders.
