Open day: The renovated indoor swimming pool of Gstaad presents itself to the public

20.09.2018

This Saturday, the Gstaad Sports Center invites you to an open day. The indoor swimming pool, a wooden construction from the beginning of the seventies, was recently renovated and since then appears in new splendor. Timbatec was responsible for the condition analysis of the construction and defined the renovation measures.

Open day: The renovated indoor swimming pool of Gstaad presents itself to the public

The indoor swimming pool in Gstaad was built in 1971 as the oldest indoor swimming pool in Switzerland with a three-hinged arch supporting structure made of glulam and is therefore a listed building. The dimensions of the wooden structure are imposing. The supporting structure consists of arch trusses that are up to 34.2 meters long.

Extensive crack repair
However, the years have left anything but a trace on the wooden hall. Building technology and structure were partially outdated, and cracks had developed in the main supporting structure of the roof.

Timbatec's timber engineers were given the task of investigating the cracks. They found that some of the cracks were so deep that the structural integrity was no longer guaranteed. In addition, it became apparent that the main girders were overloaded in some areas and therefore had to be reinforced. Timbatec was responsible, among other things, for quality assurance during the urgently needed refurbishment. Read more about the refurbishment work here.

A wellness oasis for Gstaad
Those responsible for the popular vacation resort took the indoor pool renovation as an opportunity to expand the sports center with a new 1300m2 building with a wellness area. In addition to fitness rooms, guests will find a Finnish sauna, a soft sauna, a steam bath and experience showers. A new outdoor pool was also built, from which swimmers can enjoy the view of the Bernese Oberland mountains.

Open Day
In the run-up to the upcoming winter season, the Gstaad Sports Center, including the spruced-up indoor pool, is opening its doors to the public. On this Saturday's open day, visitors will be able to see the new wellness and fitness rooms, indulge themselves in the catering and refresh themselves in the indoor pool for the special price of five francs.
