Start of Construction of Wooden Animal Bridge

Start of construction for wooden animal bridge To enable animals to cross the A2 highway near Lucerne, the federal government is building a wild animal bridge - made of wood, of course! Preparatory work for the CHF 11 million project began on Monday.

The new wildlife bridge will cross the A2 motorway at Neuenkirch in Canton Lucerne. It will thus provide an important link between the agglomeration of Lucerne and Sempach. This connection was largely interrupted for animals by the motorway.

The wildlife bridge is 50 metres wide and around 36 metres long. The construction is largely made of wood. Local spruce and oak are used. As subplanner of the engineering consortium B+S AG and Bänziger Partner AG, Timbatec calculated the statics of the wooden bridge.

For the construction work, around 3500 square metres of forest will be cut on both sides of the motorway. This will be reforested after the wildlife bridge is built. This preparatory work began on Monday. The main work will start this summer. From summer 2021, motorists will drive under the wooden wildlife bridge between Lucerne and Sempach.

A wooden wildlife bridge is also being built in Aargau

This summer, ASTRA is building a wildlife overpass between Gränichen and Suhr over the N01 highway . Of course, this will also be constructed of wood. The Rynetel wildlife bridge consists of a 50-metre wide arch structure. Timbatec also calculated the statics for this project on behalf of Bänziger Partner AG.
