The Project

With the innovative and sustainable Andermatt Swiss Alps project, the traditional Swiss mountain village is becoming an attractive year-round destination. In its final phase, it comprises six 4 and 5-star hotels, around 500 holiday apartments in 42 buildings, 25 exclusive chalets, congress facilities, a swimming pool and an 18-hole golf course. The Andermatt and Sedrun ski areas will also be merged to form the Andermatt-Sedrun ski arena. 


The Task

In this context, the 5-star superior hotel "The Chedi Andermatt" is being built centrally in the town. Timbatec was commissioned to plan the façade and roof construction for the entire hotel complex and to advise on façade planning with regard to fire protection and construction. 


The Challenges

To ensure the greatest possible flexibility in attics, the architects demanded a column-free roof structure. An arched truss construction with roof-mounted elements that span the attics with a width of around 23 meters has now been implemented.  


A special sticking point in the roof construction were the large canopies, which have a projection of up to 3 meters at the eaves and verge. This with snow loads of 12kN/m² plus snow overhang along the roof edges of around 8.3 kN/m¹.  


Another challenge was the fire safety of the timber facade with curtain-type timber lattice, especially in the high-rise area of the main building.
